In 1945, Sam Golden was on leave from the Camp Lee Army Base for the first time. When the phone rang at his parents' home in Roanoke, his buddies hollered, "Hey Sam, there is a gal in town and she doesn't have anything to do. How about you take her to the party Christmas Eve?"
"That was Marion," Golden said Monday. His clear blue eyes teared as he remembered his wife of 56 years, who died in October.
