Capt. Jim Blackburn might be delusional, but then again, maybe he's crazy like a fox. Could be the fly-fishing pilgrim has hooked onto something here - like a new angle for flats fishing, to say nothing of a fresh image for a fish held too long in low esteem.
That would be old man carp, aka bugle-mouthed bass in some circles. But when Blackburn peers through his polarized, tinted glasses, the creature he sees is a "golden bonefish." He would tell you the ancient species is at least as fly- rod worthy as its smaller saltwater namesake.
He ought to know, and the golden bone itself will back his claim emphatically when it slurps your fly and rips hundreds of yards of backing from your reel.

In 1945, Sam Golden was on leave from the Camp Lee Army Base for the first time. When the phone rang at his parents' home in Roanoke, his buddies hollered, "Hey Sam, there is a gal in town and she doesn't have anything to do. How about you take her to the party Christmas Eve?"
"That was Marion," Golden said Monday. His clear blue eyes teared as he remembered his wife of 56 years, who died in October.
During their marriage, the couple set aside money to help others, aiding the construction of Golden Park in Southeast Roanoke.
And in the 1960s, at Marion Golden's inspiration, the pair founded the Sam and Marion Golden Helping Hand Foundation through which they helped about 70 local and ...
